David Gray, Artist, Plymouth.
David Gray has been painting for nearly 50 years, principally landscapes and still life and more recently portraits. He was born in Dublin but grew up and was educated in Glasgow where he attended Saturday morning classes and then evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art. During a varied career, David spent 14 years in the Royal Navy which provided plenty of inspiration for his work; from the West Indies to the Middle East and Gibraltar. He studied with Robert Lenkiewicz for 18 months in Plymouth after leaving the Navy.
‘My love of the hidden corners of the English landscape and the many moods of nature are a constant source of inspiration to me.’ I accept commissions to paint landscapes. Portrait paintings are a much more intimate exercise and are only done of people that I know very well.
David has had several solo exhibitions in Plymouth and sales from his works now reside as well as in the UK in Canada, USA, Australia, Spain, Ireland and even China when a couple from the visiting Chinese Circus bought a painting to take home! His exhibition of Plymouth allotments was opened by Councillor Peter Smith of Parks and Leisure on Plymouth City Council. This exhibition as with others was very successful.
Since retiring a couple of years ago David has taken the opportunity to travel and last year he and his wife Lynn toured through Russia and Eastern Europe overland which resulted in a group of paintings depicting especially the vast Russian countryside. These will be exhibited at a later date.
During 2012 David exhibited at The Wharf, Tavistock; Brimpts Farm, a Conference Centre at Dartmeet and took part in a joint exhibition held in Finland. In 2013 David and Lynn are visiting British Columbia where Lynn has family. They are also going to tour some of the canyons in Arizona, USA where David will be looking for inspiration for paintings and he hopes to be able to do some ‘plein-air’ painting in the canyons. On the way back to Vancouver they hope to visit Las Vegas – “just to see what it is all about”!
An illustrated biography on David and his art was published in November 2010 by Garage Press and edited by Graham Ovenden. This is available from the artist. David is a member of the East Cornwall Society of Artists and exhibits with them at the Ebenezer Gallery Polperro.
